Rivian’s Newest: Rubicon Trail Capable Like The R1S?

Share this:

Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer that drove its R1S SUV over the legendary Rubicon Trail, has unveiled its latest creations. They’re called R2, R3, and R3X. These new vehicles are smaller than the R1T and R1S but still retain a fascinating collection of tech and capabilities. They’re also less expensive. Here’s a look at the Rivian R2, R3, and R3X.

Rivian R2.

Rivian R2 Price, Motors, Size

The five-passenger Rivian R2 will have a base price of $45,000. It will be offered in single, dual, and tri-motor versions. The tri-motor all-wheel-drive setup uses a pair of motors in the rear and a single motor up front. R2’s 0-60 mph acceleration is said to be under 3 seconds. The R2 has a wheelbase of 115.6 inches, which is about 5 inches shorter than Rivian’s R1S. Also, for comparison: that’s about 6 inches less than the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV. The R2’s overall length is 185.6 inches, which is around 15 inches less than the R1S. Finally, the R2’s approach angle is 25 degrees, departure angle is 27 degrees, and ground clearance is 9.8 inches.

Batteries, Interior, And More

The R2’s batteries are in the floor of the car. In fact, the company says the car’s floor is the top of the battery pack. The R2 is said to have a range of up to 300 miles and it’ll come with Tesla’s NACS charge port installed. As you’d expect, tech abounds in the R2. Example: There are 11 cameras and 5 radars. According to Rivian, this tech helps give the car full autonomous driving capability. Other features of the R2 include fold-flat front seats (toss an air mattress inside and enjoy low-buck overlanding), pop-out rear windows for improved ventilation, and rear glass that lowers. Additionally, the R2 has dual gloveboxes, a hidden drawer, and next gen steering wheel controls with haptic feedback.

Rivian R3

Rivian R3

The Rivian R3 is smaller than the R2. Rivian says the R3 takes the packaging of the R2, and the platform, and shrinks it. The R2’s wheelbase measures in at approximately 110 inches, which is about 5 inches shorter than the R2. Like the R2, it will be available in single, dual, and tri-motor configurations. The R3 has a few tricks up its sleeve, like adjustable flipper glass in the liftgate. Inside, there are many similarities to the R2. No pricing was announced for the R3.

Rivian R3X

For those looking for something more off-road-ready, there’s the Rivian R3X. It has been tweaked to improve on- and off-road performance. The R3X adds wider wheels and tires, thus a wider stance. It comes with the all-wheel-drive tri-motor setup. Rivian says that the R3X has increased ground clearance when compared to its R3 sibling. Look closely, and you’ll see the R3X sports a pair of front-mounted towhooks, a larger rear spoiler, and specific rear bumper cladding. Also, a set of more aggressive tires and model-specific wheels. Fun fact: The wheels bear a passing resemblance to those found on a 10th Anniversary Pontiac Trans Am. There are also a number of interior tweaks. Pricing has not been announced for the R3X.

More About The Rivian R2, R3, And R3X

The R2 will be available in the first half of 2026 with the R3 and R3X to follow. Reservations are now open for the vehicles at rivian.com. Of course, we’re curious if Rivian is planning to take any or all these newly unveiled vehicles over the Rubicon Trail like it did with the R1S. Time will tell. And time will reveal more info on the R2, R3, and R3X, so stay tuned.
