Kawasaki Unveils Its Ninja and Z E-1 ABS Electric Motorcycles

Share this:

Kawasaki just unveiled two new all-electric motorcycles. They’re called the Ninja e-1 ABS and the Z e-1 ABS. The two lightweight bikes share many of the same technical specs but are distinctly different in styling and ergonomics. Here’s a look at the 2024 Kawasaki Ninja e-1 ABS and Z e-1 ABS.

Electric Motor and Batteries

A brushless electric motor powers each cycle. The motor is rated at 5 kWh with a max rating of 9 kWh. The result, according to Kawasaki, is strong low-end power and quick throttle response. The motor is fed by a pair of removable lithium-ion batteries that have a nominal voltage of 50.4V and a total nominal capacity of 30Ah each. Each battery weighs 25.3 pounds. The batteries are in parallel arrangement, which allows one-battery operation in Eco mode. The batteries are securely located but can be easily removed. Furthermore, battery charge condition is checked either via a button on each battery or via instrument display when the batteries are installed. Charge time for each battery is 3.7 hours (0-100 percent) and 1.6 hours (20-85 percent).

Road Mode, Eco Mode, and E-Boost

Normal riding mode is Road mode. Top speed for the Ninja e-1 ABS is approximately 52 mph and 49 mph for the Z e-1 ABS. Additionally, there’s an Eco mode. This limits top speed on the Ninja e-1 ABS to approximately 37 mph and approximately 35 mph for the Z e-1 ABS. But there’s also an e-boost function that increases power. It offers stronger acceleration and a higher top speed for up to 15 seconds. Using e-boost gives the Ninja e-1 ABS a top speed of approximately 65 mph in Road mode and 37-45 mph in Eco mode. The Z e-1 ABS’s e-boost bump results in a top speed of approximately 65 mph in Road mode and 42 mph in Eco mode. Furthermore, each motorcycle has a range of up to 41 miles in Road mode without using e-boost.

Kawasaki Ninja e-1 ABS and Z e-1 ABS Commonalities

The Kawasaki Ninja e-1 ABS and Z e-1 ABS have a lightweight trellis frame that’s similar in design to the gas-powered Ninja motorcycle frame. However, the frame is reinforced for rigidity and the motor mounts are positioned low to help lower the center of gravity. Each bike has 41mm forks and a rear Uni-Trak suspension offers four-way preload and 2.5 inches of travel. Forward velocity is reined in via a 290mm front disc brake up front and a 220mm disc brake in the rear. Both utilize dual-piston calipers. ABS is standard. Finally, each bike is fitted with 17-inch tires, and they contribute to the bikes nimble handling.

Pricing and Availability

So what is the pricing of each bike? The 2024 Kawasaki Ninja e-1 ABS MSRP is $7,599. The 2024 Kawasaki Z e-1 ABS MSRP is $7,299. Further, both are available in three colors, Metallic Bright Silver, Metallic Matte Lime Green, or Ebony.

The Bottom Line

Kawasaki says that these two new electric motorcycles are a “light-hearted solution to urban commuting.” For many riders in that scenario, they’ll probably accomplish the task quite well. And look good doing it. The Kawasaki Ninja e-1 ABS at 308.7 pounds and the Z e-1 ABS at 297.7 pounds, appear to be solid options for those that want a light weight, “tossable” bike for commuting or fun on some twisties.
