Formula E Car Sets New World Indoor Speed Record

On July 27, 2023, Formula E driver Jake Hughes set a new world indoor speed record of 135.9 mph (218.71 kph) in a modified Formula E Gen3 car at the ExCeL London events arena. The previous record of 102.65 mph was set by a Porsche Taycan in 2021.

The record-setting run was part of a promotional event for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, which will be held at the ExCeL London arena on July 29-30, 2023. Hughes navigated a 130-degree turn at approximately 25 mph before turning the car loose down a .176-mile (283-meter, 929-foot) straightaway.

The GENBETA car that Hughes drove was modified to remove some of the safety features that are required for Formula E racing, such as the roll cage and the fire suppression system. The car also had a larger battery pack and a more powerful electric motor.

The new indoor speed record is a significant achievement for Formula E cars. It shows that electric cars are capable of achieving high speeds, even in confined spaces. This could lead to more widespread adoption of electric cars for racing and other high-performance applications.

The record also highlights the progress that has been made in the development of electric car technology. In just a few years, the top speed of electric cars has increased by more than 30 mph. This is due to several factors, including the development of more powerful electric motors and batteries.

Likely, the new indoor speed record will not stand for long. As electric car technology continues to improve, it is only a matter of time before another driver breaks the record. It is even possible that electric cars could one day reach speeds of over 200 mph.

The new indoor speed record is a testament to the progress that has been made in electric car technology. It is also a sign of things to come, as electric cars become more powerful and efficient. In the future, we could see electric cars setting new speed records on both the track and the road.
