A Ford Explorer EV is the first electric vehicle to circumnavigate the globe. The preproduction crossover was driven by adventurer Lexie Alford. The world record was verified by RecordSetter, who monitored the attempt at various locations around the world. To establish the circumnavigation record, Lexie and the Explorer had to meet specific criteria. This included driving a minimum distance of 18,000 miles, passing through two antipodean points, and traversing at least five continents. Additionally, the journey was required to commence and conclude at the same location.
6 Continents And 27 Countries
During the journey spanning 6 continents and 27 countries, the European-spec vehicle was charged various ways. These ranged from 2.2 kW AC wall outlets to DC fast chargers and a portable battery pack. The Explorer encountered challenges including power outages in Africa, limited charging infrastructure in Chile’s Atacama Desert, rugged terrain, and freezing conditions. However, this achievement underscores the capabilities of electric vehicles.
Ford’s First Passenger EV Developed And Built In Europe
The all-electric Explorer crossover is the company’s first passenger EV to be developed and built in Europe. The vehicle merges German engineering with American style, boasting a superior standard specification. Notably, it incorporates battery electric powertrains that offer an impressive driving range of up to 374 miles on a single charge. The Explorer’s powertrain options include a single motor rear-wheel-drive or dual motor all-wheel-drive configuration. These powertrains utilize an extended-range lithium-ion nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery. This battery type is specifically chosen for its energy density, power, and performance across various European climates. Additionally, a single motor rear-wheel-drive powertrain with a standard-range NMC battery will be made available later. Acceleration and towing capabilities of the Explorer are noteworthy features. The Explorer can achieve 0-62 mph in just 5.3 seconds with the AWD model’s 335 hp. Furthermore, the Explorer AWD variant boasts a towing capacity of up to 2,646 pounds.
Pushing The Limits Of What’s Possible To Do In An EV
Lexi notes that the Explorer has been like home for the past six months. “On this epic adventure, I met incredible people from many corners of the world and experienced 27 beautiful countries while behind the wheel. But this journey came with a unique set of challenges,” said Lexie, who also holds the world record for being the youngest person to visit every country in the world. “It has been the honor of a lifetime to be trusted by Ford to circumnavigate the globe in the electric Explorer, which has been like home for the last six months. I had the goal of pushing the limits of what’s possible to do in an EV and I’m proud to say I have!”
The Ultimate Test Drive For The Explorer EV

It embodies the true ‘can do’ spirit of this company, seizing this great opportunity to not only test ourselves but also the world’s charging infrastructure. Today’s crossing of the finish line proves just what you can do in the new all-electric Ford Explorer, and we’re delighted that customers will soon be able to find out for themselves.”
