Here’s Mazda’s Eye-Popping ICONIC SP Rotary-Powered Hybrid Concept

Share this:

Mazda has unveiled an eye-popping compact sports car concept called the ICONIC SP. It has many interesting design and technical features, but one of the most fascinating is the car’s powertrain. It uses a unique two-rotor rotary EV system. The rotary engine charges the car’s batteries, which drive the electric motors. Here’s a look at the Mazda ICONIC SP Concept.

The Two-Rotor Rotary EV System Can Run On Hydrogen

The two-rotor rotary EV system has a rotary engine that can burn several types of fuel, including hydrogen. This means it can generate electricity via carbon-neutral fuel. Hence, when the battery is charged with electricity derived from renewable energy, it’s possible to drive in a virtually carbon-neutral state. The ICONIC SP’s two-rotor rotary EV system is compact, and it allows for a low center of gravity. The benefit is that keeping the weight low in the vehicle enhances driving performance.

Center-Mounted Two-Rotor Rotary EV System

Not only is the two-rotor rotary EV system mounted low in the car, but it’s also mounted in the center of the car. This contributes to a weight distribution of around 50/50, which helps to achieve excellent driving performance. The two-rotor rotary EV system pumps out high output and the lower center of gravity keeps things grounded, both of which further enhance performance. Mazda hasn’t released specifications on the car’s batteries. However, the company did say that the car’s batteries can be used to power external items for recreation or in times of emergency.

Mazda ICONIC SP Concept Color and Measurements

There’s a reason why Mazda chose the color red for the ICONIC SP’s exterior. It’s actually called “Viola Red.” The company focused on making a vivid color, while creating a sense of shade that accentuates the shape of the car. The ICONIC SP is approximately 165 inches long, 73 inches wide, and 45 inches tall. The car’s wheelbase is approximately 102 inches. The car has an approximate weight of 3,197 pounds. For comparison, the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata is approximately 11 inches shorter in length, almost 5 inches narrower in width, and over 3 inches taller. Additionally, the Miata’s wheelbase is approximately 11 inches shorter than the ICONIC SP’s. Finally, the Miata (with automatic transmission) weighs approximately 794 pounds less than the ICONIC SP.

Mazda Loves Cars

Masahiro Moro, Mazda’s Representative Director, President and CEO made the following comment: “Mazda will always deliver vehicles that remind people that cars are pure joy and an indispensable part of their lives. As a car-loving company that mass-produces the inspiring mobility experience, we are committed to shaping the future with our partners sharing the same goal, as well as our fans, where everyone can proudly say, ‘we love cars.’ With such a strong will, Mazda is committed to enrich life-in-motion for those we serve.”

The Bottom Line

The Mazda ICONIC SP’s styling is a smooth head turner. And the unique powertrain could spawn conversations as well as efficiency and power. With these aspects combined, Mazda could have a winner here if the car went into production.
