How fast can you charge your electric car? This is one of the most important questions for EV owners and potential buyers, as charging time affects convenience, range anxiety, and overall satisfaction. A new report by P3 Group, a global consulting firm, has ranked the top 10 EV models in the US market based on their charging performance and has anointed a fast-charging champ.

The report called the P3 Charging Index, measures how much range an EV can gain from a 20-minute charge at a public DC fast charger. The index is calculated by dividing the range gained by the maximum range of the vehicle. For example, if a car can gain 200 miles of range in 20 minutes and has a maximum range of 400 miles, its index is 0.5.

According to the report, the Lucid Air GT, a luxury sedan that competes with Tesla Model S, tops the list with an impressive index of 0.94. This means that the Air GT can get 208 miles of range in 20 minutes, which is more than enough for most daily trips. The Air GT has a 900 V battery architecture and a peak charging power of 350 kW, which enables its fast charging capability.

The second place goes to the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus, which has an index of 0.88. The Model S can gain 187 miles of range in 20 minutes, thanks to its 400 V battery and peak power of 250 kW. The Model S also benefits from Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, which offers reliable and convenient access to fast charging stations.

The third place is a tie between Tesla Model X Long Range Plus and Kia EV6 GT-Line, both with an index of 0.86. The Model X can gain 180 miles of range in 20 minutes, while the EV6 can gain 201 miles. The EV6 is the first model to use Kia’s new E-GMP platform, which also features a 800 V battery and a peak power of 350 kW. The EV6 is expected to launch in the US later this year.

The Tesla Model 3 and Y overtake the Porsche Taycan with indexes of 0.85 and 0.81, respectively, so Tesla secures four of the top five places in the P3 Charging Index. Far behind, the VW ID.4 exhibits a range of 129 miles in 20 minutes with its 400 V architecture, leading to an index of 0.65.

The P3 Charging Index is based on real-world data collected by P3’s engineers, who drove and charged more than 40 EV models across the US. The report aims to provide objective and transparent information to consumers and industry stakeholders about the charging performance of different EVs.

The report also highlights some of the challenges and opportunities for improving the charging experience in the US market, such as standardizing charging connectors, increasing charging power and availability, and reducing charging costs and variability.

As more EV models enter the market and more consumers adopt them, fast charging will become a key factor for customer satisfaction and loyalty. The P3 Charging Index offers a useful benchmark for comparing different EVs and their charging capabilities.
