The Ioniq 5 N is Hyundai’s first electric model under its N performance subbrand, which aims to enhance the competitiveness of all Hyundai models. The electric compact crossover has a dual motor system that produces 641 hp in boost mode and can perform various driving maneuvers like a gasoline-powered race car.

The 5 N is based on Hyundai’s e-GMP platform, the same as the Kia EV6, which also has a high-performance GT version with 576 hp. However, the Ioniq 5 N has new technology inspired by the i20 Coupe N, a car designed for the World Rally Championships and the benchmark for Hyundai’s N line of performance-oriented variants.

Hyundai also offers an N variant on the Kona crossover and the Elantra compact sedan, which have a front-wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that delivers 276 hp.

This hot rod Hyundai has an 84-kilowatt-hour battery pack that powers a 222-hp (166 kw) front motor and a 377-hp (282 kw) rear motor for a total of 599 hp (448 kw). It can reach a top speed of 161 mph. Hyundai did not reveal the EV’s range.

The Ioniq 5 N has a distinctive look with black exterior accents and a wing-type spoiler on the back. A lip spoiler on the front lowers its stance by 20 mm compared to the standard Ioniq 5. It also has a wider body by 50 mm to fit 21-inch wheels and larger tires, and a longer body by 80 mm because of a rear

This new high-performance EV combines Hyundai’s N brand identity with the futuristic design of the Ioniq 5. The exterior features a checkered flag motif on the door scuff panels, metal pedals, and footrest, as well as N logos and seat bolsters. The interior is equipped with advanced technology that enhances the driving experience.

The 5-door hatch has a reinforced body and chassis for improved handling and steering response, as well as a smart software function called N Pedal that adjusts the power distribution according to the cornering conditions. The EV also has various electronic controls for drifting, such as N Drift Optimizer, Torque Kick Drift and N Grin Boost. These allow the driver to maintain and initiate drifts with ease and precision.

The Ioniq 5 N also simulates the feeling and sound of a conventional ICE vehicle with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The N e-Shift and N Active Sound + technologies provide sensory feedback and an exhilarating soundtrack that blends ICE and EV elements. Hyundai said these features are designed to satisfy performance enthusiasts who want more engagement from EVs.

The N also has a sophisticated battery thermal management system that prevents overheating and performance loss during track racing. The system has separate radiators for the battery and motor, as well as a larger cooling area, a better motor oil cooler, and a battery chiller. The EV also has powerful brakes with lightweight discs and calipers that ensure optimal stopping power and regenerative braking.
