Behold, Acura’s First All-Electric Model: ZDX

Share this:

The all-electric 2024 Acura ZDX SUV has dropped and it’s a momentous occasion because it’s the brand’s first fully electric vehicle. The ZDX is offered in two models, the A-Spec and “the most powerful and best performing Acura SUV ever,” the Type S.

Acura ZDX A-Spec

The Acura ZDX A-Spec will be available in both rear-wheel drive (single motor, standard) and all-wheel drive (dual-motor, optional). Starting price for the A-Spec will be in the $60,000 range. In single motor configuration the SUV has 340 hp and is fitted with a 102 kWh battery. This is the same battery used in the Type S. The rear-wheel-drive version has an estimated EPA range rating of 325 miles, while the all-wheel-drive version is slightly less at 315 miles. The A-Spec’s suspension is comprised of a multi-link with coil springs and amplitude reactive dampers. The car rides on 265/50R20 all-season tires wrapped around 9-inch-wide aluminum alloy wheels. The A-Spec’s forward velocity is tamed by 12.6-inch ventilated disc brakes up front and 13.5-inch solid disc brakes in the rear.

The Type S is a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive car that has a starting price in the $70,000 range. The Type S gets a significant bump in horsepower compared to the A-Spec, coming in at 500. The estimated EPA range for the Type S is 288 miles. The Type S uses a multi-link suspension like the A-Spec, but instead of coil springs there’s a height-adjustable air suspension with performance tuned adaptive dampers. Standard tires are wider 275/40R22 self-sealing all-season units, but high-performance summer tires of the same size are optional. It’s worth noting that when opting for the summer tires you also get gloss black wheels. And speaking of wheels, the Type S’s 22-inch wheels are the largest ever on an Acura. They measure 9.5 inches in width. Larger front brakes are also on the Type S’s menu. They’re comprised of 15.6-inch ventilated discs with Brembo six-piston calipers.

Tech Helps Makes the All-Electric 2024 Acura ZDX SUV Charge Faster

No matter which ZDX you choose, Acura says that recharging is quick thanks to DC fast charging at rates up to 190 kW. Acura says that the A-Spec rear-wheel drive can gain an estimated 81 miles of range in only 10 minutes when using a DC fast charger. Furthermore, the ZDX’s built-in Google system (an Acura first) allows Google maps to be displayed on either of the cars two high-def screens. Google Maps can be displayed to provide sophisticated route planning with recommended charging stations to optimize travel time. But that’s not all. Google Maps can also estimate the charging time required to reach your destination and can initiate preconditioning of the ZDX’s battery when the destination is a DC fast charging station. This preconditioning can reduce charge times to get you back on the road faster.

ZDX Tech Features

There are commonalities between the all-electric 2024 Acura ZDX SUV A-Spec and Type S. An example is the standard Bang & Olufson audio system. This system, engineered exclusively for the ZDX cabin, has 18 speakers including 4 perched in the headliner. It also has 14 channels of amplification and a subwoofer. Also standard in ZDX is AcuraWatch. This includes the company’s first application of Rear Cross Traffic Braking and Blind Zone Steering Assist. It’s worth noting that the ZDX Type S gets AcuraWatch 360+, which includes Hands Free Cruise for hands-free driving on up to 400,000 miles of compatible roads. This system also includes the Automatic Parking Assist system, another first in an Acura, which can parallel park the vehicle. Further, the ZDX has a standard 11-inch Precision Cockpit Driver Information Cluster and 11.3-inch Center Information Screen with a touchscreen interface. Additionally, there’s support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Bottom Line

It appears that Acura has entered the electrified game suited up as a serious player with its first all-electric vehicle. The ZDX SUV boasts good range, impressive performance, a helping of high tech, and several all-new features. As Acura notes, the all-electric ZDX marks a critical step on Acura’s accelerated path to a 100% electrified lineup. The Acura ZDX is due to arrive in early 2024.
