Stellantis has introduced its STLA Large platform. It’s a new and highly adaptable platform designed specifically for battery electric vehicles. It’s a fascinating creation that will underpin a variety of Stellantis vehicles.
The Dodge and Jeep Brands Will Use STLA Large First
The STLA Large platform is the foundation for a range of upcoming vehicles. It boasts a variety of capabilities such as embedded energy, efficient charging, high-performance vehicle dynamics, and Trail Rated off-road driving. The platform is set to debut with fullsize vehicles in key global markets. Initially, these vehicles will be introduced in the North American market under the Dodge and Jeep brands. Subsequent launches include Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, and Maserati. Over the period from 2024 to 2026, a total of eight vehicles are scheduled for launch using the platform.
Technological Flexibility is Baked In
Technological flexibility is incorporated into the STLA Large platform. This allows for a range of vehicle types, high quality, and enhanced customer satisfaction. This is achieved through a foundational set of components that serve as the basis for a wide range of upcoming products. The manufacturing processes are not only robust but also cost-efficient, enabling replication in multiple assembly plants. The upcoming vehicles using the STLA Large platform will include cars, crossovers, and SUVs. Look for brand-specific product announcements to begin in 2024.
Expected to Overperform Current Products
“Our goals for our STLA platforms are ambitious but this is what our customers need from us today,” Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said. “Creating a family of vehicles from a well-engineered set of components that is flexible enough to cover multiple vehicle types and propulsions, overperforming any of our current products, will address each of our iconic brands’ customers. The flexibility and agility of this platform is its hallmark and will be a driving force for our success in the shift to electrification in North America.”
Multiple Electric Architectures, Electric Drive Modules, and More
The flexibility of STLA Large extends to its unibody platform’s propulsion systems. It offers the choice of 400V and 800V electric architectures. The platform features three-in-one electric drive modules (EDMs). These integrate the motor, power inverter, and gear reduction. Engineers can configure these modules for front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive, and all-wheel-drive layouts. Utilizing silicon carbide semiconductor technology, the power inverter minimizes power losses. Furthermore, over-the-air software updates can upgrade the propulsion system’s performance over the vehicle’s lifespan. Additionally, STLA Large accommodates drivetrain enhancements like limited-slip differentials or wheel end disconnects. The goal is to improve performance or reduce mechanical drag for enhanced efficiency and range. Overall, Stellantis says the STLA Large platform has the capability to deliver extreme power, surpassing existing Hellcat V-8s.
Battery Pack Options, Range, Performance, and Charging
To balance driving range and cost, the platform initially offers several battery options. These include energy ratings ranging from 85 to 118 kWh. For sedans, STLA Large aims for an overall range of 500 miles. Furthermore, the design of the platform aims to seamlessly integrate future energy storage technologies when they become available. Initially, the propulsion components hold the potential to achieve acceleration from 0 to 62 mph within the 2-second range. Notably, fast charging has the capability to add up to 4.5 kWh per minute to the 800V battery pack. And get this: STLA Large also supports hybrid and internal combustion propulsion systems without compromising key vehicle capabilities. This flexibility offers options for buyers during the transition to electric propulsion and while the EV charging network continues to grow. The platform can accept both transverse and longitudinal engine mounting configurations. Finally, it can accommodate front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive, and all-wheel-drive drivetrains.
More STLA Large Facts
The STLA Large platform allows engineers and designers to adjust the wheelbase, overall length, overall width, height, and ground clearance. Alignment with specific vehicle performance goals can be achieved by using various suspension modules and powertrain cradles. These include ride, handling, and comfort. Engineers can fine-tune key dimensions, including the front spindle to the driver foot, front and rear overhang, or passenger compartment floor, to optimize vehicle capabilities and performance. By leveraging advanced high-strength materials, the platform strategically optimizes for weight and rigidity. This ensures best-in-class performance across a diverse range of vehicle types. The design of the platform for packaging components aims to maximize usable interior space and storage. Critical comfort and performance elements, such as the cabin heating/cooling system, steering, braking assist, and propulsion, are crafted to minimize energy consumption, thereby enhancing driving range.
STLA Large is Part of Stellantis’ Global BEV Platforms
Here’s some stats on the new STLA Large platform. It has an overall length range of 187.6-201.8 inches, an overall width range of 74.7-79.9 inches, and a wheelbase range of 113.0-121.1 inches. Its ground clearance range spans a wide range of 5.5-11.3 inches. The platform can work with a maximum tire diameter of 32.6 inches. STLA Large is part of Stellantis’ global BEV platforms, which include Small, Medium, Large, and Frame. These platforms are designed and engineered for extended lifecycles. This achievement results from the interchangeability of battery cell chemistry, EDMs, power inverters, and software control. Furthermore, the platform supports Stellantis’ cutting-edge electrical and software-defined vehicle technologies. These include STLA Brain, STLA SmartCockpit, and STLA AutoDrive.
A Key Element of Stellantis’ Strategic Vision
On EV Day 2021, Stellantis’ unveiling showcased four global BEV platforms, and STLA Large is one of them. These platforms serve as the foundation for the company’s upcoming products. Notably, STLA Large takes the spotlight as the second platform revealed. It follows STLA Medium in July 2023. Looking ahead, several plants in Europe and North America are set to integrate STLA Large. It will offer versatility through multi-energy variants, encompassing hybrid and internal combustion options. This adaptability aligns with Stellantis’ commitment to providing diverse solutions that cater to a broad consumer base. The brands within Stellantis will play a role in tailoring STLA Large vehicles to meet the wide range of needs and wants of their customers. Whether it’s a family-oriented model, a high-performance vehicle, a highly capable off-road 4×4, or a luxury option, STLA Large aims to provide a customized and comprehensive range of choices.
