You may soon be seeing Gravity’s powerful 500 kW EV charging equipment the next time you pull into a parking lot or garage. Gravity, an electric vehicle infrastructure firm, has announced a full suite of 500 kW EV charging equipment. Not only is the equipment powerful, it’s also the first chargers and system to ever be certified by UL Solutions’ following rigorous evaluation and testing. Here’s a look at the Gravity 500 kW EV charging systems.
Midtown Manhattan is Getting the First of 24 Chargers
One of the interesting things about Gravity’s 500 kW charging systems, aside from impressive power, is that they’re relatively small. As a matter of fact, the company says that they’re no bigger than a conventional level 2 charger. This is remarkable considering they are 90 times faster. Gravity is currently installing the first 24 of its 500 kW chargers at its facility in Midtown Manhattan. The company notes that each unit can provide vehicles with a 200-mile range in just five minutes of charging.
The Gravity 500 kW Charging Systems are UL Solutions Certified
Six Gravity chargers and two power cabinets have been certified by UL Solutions. These products span all installation types and conditions. The significance of the UL Solutions certification is that it validates that Gravity’s proprietary technology meets established safety and performance requirements. The company notes that the UL Solutions certification is highly sought after by both public and private partners seeking EV infrastructure providers.
Distributed Energy Access Points
Gravity’s charging units are the first of a new category of EV infrastructure. The company calls them Distributed Energy Access Points or DEAPs. DEAPs embed the EV and its battery into the electrical grid. Gravity has four chargers that are rated to 500 kW. None of the DEAPs are larger than a suitcase or carry-on. The fast chargers can be deployed in confined indoor garages where the current generation of bulky DC chargers cannot. Gravity also has two chargers rated at 200 kW that are designed for curbside posts for on-street charging. Furthermore, the company offers two power cabinets rated at 360 kW. These 6- and 12-bus cabinets enable dynamic energy management across charging sites and even entire buildings. These distribute and manage power across multiple chargers so that each vehicle is charged in the required timeframe.
Fast Public EV Charging That’s Less Expensive
In the pursuit of fast EV charging the Gravity systems are notable. The goal for most EV owners is to be able to recharge their vehicles as fast or faster than it would be to fuel an ICE car. And less expensively. Moshe Cohen, founder, and CEO of Gravity Inc., says, “DEAPs are a new generation of charger that represents a giant leap forward for the industry by promising EV charging that’s less expensive and as fast as filling up a tank of gas. This equipment isn’t only the first UL-certified 500kW charging system anywhere in the country, it’s the fastest charging system—period. This is a massive breakthrough for urban charging that will help unlock widespread EV adoption.”
