The BMW i7 Protection EV Is A Luxury Fortress

If you’ve embraced the EV lifestyle but your drive to work has hazards, like attacks from firearms and/or explosives, you’ll want to know about the all-electric BMW i7 Protection. This car is next level when it comes to combining an all-electric drive system with exceptional defensive features. As a matter of fact, it’s the world’s first-ever protection EV sedan.

Built Like a Tank, Sorta

The BMW i7 Protection is classified as offering VR9 protection. This protection level is issued based on the internationally recognized official test criteria of Germany’s Association of Test Laboratories for Attack-Resistant Materials and Constructions. The certification covers ballistic resistance and blast resistance. An example is the i7’s glass. BMW says the glass protects against fire from 7.62 x 54 R ammunition. Further, the i7’s roof and underbody has special armor to protect occupants against explosives. Occupants are also protected against drone attacks and fragments dispersed by hand grenades. The car uses BMW’s Protection Core, which includes armor steel for the sedan’s entire supporting structure. It forms a self-supporting protective cell combined with protection-spec doors, the underbody and roof armor, and safety glass.

BMW i7 Protection Electric Powertrain and Performance

The electric powertrain of the i7 Protection includes two electric motors. One is at the front axle and the other is at the rear. Numerous components were sourced from BMW’s most powerful all-electric car, the i7 M70 xDrive. This gives the all-wheel-drive i7 Protection 544 hp and 549 lb-ft of torque. On the performance front, BMW says the i7 Protection does 0-62 mph in 9 seconds. This is a bit lackadaisical compared to the 3.7 seconds of the i7 M70 xDrive and is likely due to the car’s weight. Top speed is electronically limited to 99 mph. The i7 Protection has BMW’s Integral Active Steering. This standard feature allows the rear wheels to steer, which reduces the car’s turning circle. Another benefit: increased precision and dynamic response during quick cornering. Like when you’re trying to outrun bad actors.

Large Wheels and Run Flat Tires

The i7 Protection has large 20-inch wheels and these not only allow for the use of a larger braking system, but the wheels also fit large diameter Michelin tires. These tires hold an “extremely high volume of air,” which helps to enhance ride comfort. Further, the wheels have a run flat ring that allows the car to drive up to 50 mph even with a complete loss of tire pressure.

Passenger Tech and Comfort

Passengers in the i7 Protection are coddled in luxury, technology, and safety. Inside the car you’ll find the level of room and seating comfort to hardly differ from a conventional 7 Series sedan. For the driver there’s an extensive selection of driver assistance systems that provide information and warnings. However, the system doesn’t actively intervene to control the vehicle. This is very important when unorthodox emergency driving techniques are necessary. Passengers can enjoy a cold drink from the 8-liter “cool box,” a 1,265-watt surround sound system with 28 speakers, motorized assist for opening and closing the armored doors, electrically operated roller sun blinds, heated and ventilated leather seats, and even the ability to automatically close the doors with the touch of a button. There’s also an intercom system that allows passengers to communicate with people outside the vehicle without opening the windows.

BMW i7 Protection Options

Optional protection measures allow the i7 Protection to handle a variety of attack scenarios. Further, the vehicle can be fitted with massaging seats, a fresh-air supply system, fire extinguisher with manual and automatic discharge, flashing lights, radio transceivers, and flag poles for official business. There’s even an Executive Lounge option that includes the ability to fully recline the rear seat behind the passenger.

Sometimes, Blending In Is Important

Sometimes there’s a need to blend in and the i7 Protection allows that to happen. BMW notes that just a few exterior details distinguish the i7 Protection from a regular 7 Series sedan with the M Sport package. This is done by design and it insures a discreet and inconspicuous package.

Last Words

The BMW i7 Protection is available only in Europe. Assembly is at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in an elaborate “craft manufacturing” process. Deliveries of the i7 Protection will begin in December 2023.
