Five Best North American Based E-Bikes For 2023

Share this:

The market for e-bikes is booming. In 2021, global e-bike sales reached 17.6 million units, up from 12.4 million units in 2020. For 2023, total unit sales are expected to hit 40 million. This growth is being driven by several factors, including the increasing popularity of cycling for commuting and recreation, the rising cost of gasoline, and the growing awareness of the environmental benefits of riding a bike

There are a number of great e-bike manufacturers on the market, but if you want to support American-based manufacturers that design e-bikes locally, we bring you a list of 5 of the top US-based makers. To be fair, the global bicycle manufacturing industry is dominated by overseas component makers like Bosch, Bafang, Kenda, and Shimano, but US firms not only lead the field in design and innovation but excel in branding, sales, and service as well. For any iPhone owner, the etching on the back of the device that says “Made in Taiwan, Designed in California.” is well known. Same thing with American e-bike manufacturers.

Aventon: Aventon is an Ontario, California-based company making e-bikes since 2014. The company offers many e-bikes, from affordable commuter models to high-performance mountain bikes. Aventon e-bikes are known for their quality construction, comfortable ride, and long battery life.

Aventon founded by JW Zhang, was originally a fixed-gear bicycle company before moving into the e-bike market in 2018 with the release of its Pace 500 model. Since then, the company has released numerous models of e-bikes, with many of these winning recognition throughout the industry.

Cannondale: Cannondale is a well-known name in the cycling world, and the company also makes great e-bikes. Cannondale bikes are known for their performance and handling, and they offer a variety of models to choose from, including road bikes, mountain bikes, and hybrid bikes.

The company was founded in 1971 by Joe Montgomery and Murdock MacGregor and today Cannondale Bicycle Corporation is an American division of Dutch conglomerate Pon Holdings that supplies bicycles. Its headquarters are in Wilton, Connecticut, but engineering and assembly are off-shore these days. We included Cannondale in this list because the design of the bike happens right here in ‘Merica. Rad Power Bikes: Rad Power Bikes is a Seattle, Washington company that makes affordable e-bikes. Rad Power Bikes e-bikes are a great option for riders who want a stylish and fun e-bike without breaking the bank. Rad Power Bikes e-bikes are known for their powerful motors, long battery life, and comfortable ride. The Rad Rover 6 Plus has a 750w motor, a top speed of 20mph, and a 45-mile range.

Rad Power Bikes is the perennial American success story. Once a scrappy start-up, they have grown to be one of the preeminent e-bike makers in the world. Before Mike Radenbaugh was the founder & chairman of North America’s largest e-bike maker, he was a talented tinkerer. He’d spend hours in his folks’ garage soldering spare electronic parts to an old bicycle in hopes of developing a better way to complete his arduous 15-mile ride to school. He soon linked up with a high school friend and 550k riders later, the rest is history.

Mokwheel E-bikes: Another Ontario e-bike manufacturer based out of Ontario, California is Mokwheel. Before its creation, Denny Liu, the founder, was highly successful in the electric mobility scene with products such as hoverboards and electric scooters. His success was not only built based on his knowledge and understanding of the electric mobility scene but also on his dedication to quality and service to build a reputable brand people can trust.  Denny has been in the industry since 2014 and decided to create Mokwheel because he saw something different.  The Tor Plus comes with a 750w motor, up to 55-mile range on a single charge, and can lug around cargo up to 400 lbs.

Phatmoto E-Bikes:  Based in Van Nuys, California. Phatmoto specializes in retro electric bikes. Out of all the manufacturers here, Phatmoto is arguably the coolest. Van Nuys used to be home to a big GM plant and built Camaros and Firebirds for years. Most manufacturing left Southern California years ago and from the ashes of the old industrial economy, companies like Phatmoto have rekindled American innovation. Dig the Phatmoto Electric Chopper offering an experience you wo get nowhere else. With premium fat tires and a 750W motor and a lowrider vibe, it lives up to its big phat promise.
