Check out the new MG Cyberster EV, which wowed ’em at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show. It’s a two-seater convertible from China’s largest automaker, SAIC and harkens back to the brand’s heyday in the mid-20th century. The car features scissor doors and will be available in China and Europe in 2024. MG is owned by China’s SAIC, and given current trade relations, makes it a longshot that the Cyberster will ever be sold in the U.S.
The car will come in two versions: a single-motor rear-wheel drive with 309 hp and a dual-motor all-wheel drive with 536 hp. The base model weighs 4,078 pounds and the dual-motor model weighs 4,376 pounds. MG has been producing EVs for several years and the electric roadster has been in the hopper since at least 2018. The Mazda MX-5 Miata and classic MG models like the MGB were sources of inspiration.
The Cyberster joins other small electric convertibles, such as the Mini Cooper SE Convertible, that we won’t get here in the U.S. Volkswagen has also shown renderings of an electric convertible based on the ID.3 hatchback, but it’s not sold in the U.S., making it unlikely that a production version would be offered here either. Boooo, hiss.
Electrified Mag’s Take: If SAIC sounds familiar, that’s because they partner with General Motors in China and produce micro vans and cars. When most Americans think of MG, they think of light, fun sports cars with spotty Lucas electronics and so-so build quality. Well, forget every bit of that as the new MG is a full lineup brand with blandtastic styling and copycat cars.
If you have a soft spot for old MG’s maybe this new Roadster might appeal to you. About the only thing it has in common with an original MG is its two-door roadster body style. The darn thing weighs as much as a Challenger so it’s not really small nor a featherweight. For now, it doesn’t make any difference for us as we most likely won’t see this on our shores. So for now, oogle from afar, as this new age, EV MG is a very cool unicorn not available in America.
