CES 2024: Honda Drops A Pair Of Wild EV Concepts

Share this:

Honda wowed the CES 2024 crowd with its brand-new Honda 0 Series. It’s an electric vehicle series set to hit the global stage in 2026. The Series includes two concept models, the Saloon and Space-Hub. In 2026 Honda will roll out a North American model inspired by the Saloon concept. And the company isn’t stopping there. Honda has plans to drop models all over the world – including Japan, Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and South America. Both vehicles use a new electrification design and engineering method. According to Shinji Aoyama, the Global EVP of Honda, the company has gone back to basics and crafted the 0 Series with a design tailored for the new era. He says it has a bold and pure proportion that, at first glance, stands out big time from other EVs. It’s all about sparking a new perspective for people.

Saloon is the Flagship Concept Model

The Saloon is the flagship concept model in the Honda 0 Series. It’s perched on a dedicated EV platform, delivering the Honda “M/M” mantra. That’s man maximum/machine minimum packaging. The exterior is low and wide, and the interior is roomier than you’d expect. Inside, the instrument panel is like something out of the future. It has a human-machine interface (HMI) that enables simple and intuitive operation. Under the hood is some serious tech. Honda is introducing steer-by-wire and motion control management systems, showing off the company’s robotics expertise. The Saloon comes equipped with posture control that’s like having a driving assistant, making sure you feel the “joy of driving” in the age of EVs.

Space-Hub = Flexible Space

The Space-Hub was developed under the theme of “augmenting people’s daily lives.” The spacious cabin and excellent visibility is based on the “Thin, Light, and Wise” development approach. Consequently, the Space-Hub offers a flexible space that accommodates a variety of passengers and becomes a “hub” that connects people to each other and the outside world.

About the Honda 0 Series

The Saloon and Space-Hub are a part of Honda’s new global EV series named Honda 0 Series. The Honda 0 Series signifies a departure from the company’s previous direction and adopts a fresh approach to design and engineering. The development of the Honda 0 Series is guided by three core principles: Thin, Light, and Wise. These principles challenge the limitations of battery electric vehicles and draw inspiration from enduring Honda engineering philosophies such as M/M. The application of these principles will be evident in critical areas. These include the utilization of a dedicated “thin” EV platform to optimize aerodynamic performance. Additionally, the incorporation of software-defined mobility products. Moreover, the Honda 0 Series is set to introduce advancements in design, automated driving, connected technologies, performance, and battery efficiency. This marks a significant step in the evolution of electrified vehicles.

Design Philosophy and Aerodynamic Technologies

The models in the series will incorporate a novel design philosophy termed “The Art of Resonance.” This aims to harmonize the environment, society, and users. This philosophy encompasses the utilization of sustainable materials and the intentional evocation of emotion through design. Furthermore, Honda will employ proprietary electrification and performance technologies to deliver a sporty driving experience. Drawing on extensive motorsports expertise, including Formula 1 racing, the models will showcase advanced aerodynamic technologies, elevating the performance standards for electrified vehicles.

Advanced Driver-Assistive System and Automated Driving Features

The Honda 0 Series is set to incorporate an advanced driver-assistive system (ADAS) utilizing technologies derived from Honda SENSING Elite. This was initially deployed in 2021 with the Honda Legend in Japan. Moreover, in the latter part of the 2020s, Honda 0 Series models will integrate the next generation of automated driving (AD) features. This will include making these features available on more affordable EV models to facilitate the widespread adoption of AD systems. The development of the next generation AD system is grounded in Honda’s “human-centric” safety concept. This system will leverage advanced AI, sensing, recognition, and driver monitoring technologies to enhance risk predictions. This will render them more human-like, natural, and highly precise. Consequently, users can expect AD features that instill a sense of safety and confidence. The advanced AD system is poised to expand the application of hands-off functions for use on both expressways and surface streets.

The 0 Series Will Use an Original Operating System

Honda is actively developing an original operating system for the Honda 0 Series models. This system, powered by AI and driver data, will enable the vehicle to learn the user’s preferences, behaviors, and driving tendencies. Consequently, the vehicle will proactively make suggestions to enhance the overall ownership experience. Furthermore, the vehicle will furnish information about the surrounding areas and provide additional route guidance for the “last mile” of the journey, facilitating user navigation after they arrive and depart from their vehicle. As the vehicle gains a deeper understanding of user behavior, it will continuously deliver new value. The more individuals utilize their vehicle, the more enjoyable and connected the ownership experience becomes.

High Density Battery with Minimized Size

The Honda 0 Series models are set to incorporate e-Axles. This is a system that consists of a motor, inverter, and gearbox, which convert electric power energy into driving force. The e-Axles enhance power and efficiency while maintaining a lightweight design. Honda’s upcoming EV models will pack a punch with high-density batteries. These batteries deliver impressive range while keeping the overall size compact. Honda is also addressing concerns related to charging time and battery degradation. The Honda 0 Series models aim to deliver stress-free charging and sustained battery performance with minimal degradation over time. For the late-2020s release of the Honda 0 Series, the fast-charging duration from 15-80 percent of battery capacity is projected to be reduced to approximately 10-15 minutes. Concurrently, through the application of battery system control technology, Honda aims to limit the degradation of battery capacity to less than 10 percent after a decade of use.

Electrified Vehicles Get Honda’s New “H” Mark

The existing Honda “H mark” has a lengthy history, tracing its origins back to 1981. In preparation for the launch of the next-generation EVs, Honda has crafted a fresh H mark. This redesigned emblem signifies the company’s commitment to undergoing a historic transformation and its pursuit of new challenges and advancements. The novel design, portraying two outstretched hands, serves as a symbol of Honda’s dedication to broadening the horizons of mobility and continually meeting the evolving needs of its customers. Honda is adopting an updated H mark for its upcoming EV models, including the Honda 0 Series.
